New Coca Cola campus

DESCRIPTION

In 2010 Coca Cola decided to refresh their main headquarter in Atlanta with one question in mind: how to create a better, more pleasant and more effective work environment for more than 5000 workers? As the company grew it became clear that something more than just office space would be needed. Teamed up with IDEO and looking ahead to 2020 the company kicked-off the design process of a new building. How to make people come to work with a more positive attitude? It was necessary to break the daily office routine, to enable more open contact with colleagues from other departments and teams. The employees sought confirmation that their work contributed to product quality, that they are an important part of the process, not just an another small cog in a large machine. The old office layout, based on individual rooms that turned out to be the biggest obstacle in communication, was eliminated. The company interior was completely different from the outside image of the Coca Cola brand. IDEO researched into the opinions of employees, managers, customers and guests on the headquarter building. A new open, friendly and flexible campus was designed. The employees have now much more diverse environments for work and do not have to sit at one desk all the day. Warm open office space and corridors were different from typical arrangements of a corporate office with separate boxes. New cafeterias were also created, so were smaller teamwork hubs and an outdoor courtyard. Now, after all these changes, the employees are proud of their workplace and even invite their friends for a visit. Ultimately the redesign changed the way the company worked, played, and profited. This successful experience encouraged Coca Cola to scale up similar changes to other office locations around the world.

JUSTIFICATION

The project dealt with a challenge of how to adapt the office space in a headquarter f a big Corporation to the needs of its employees. It is not only the infrastructure that matters – the interviews and discussions gave insights into motivations and feelings of the staff related to their workplace. This allowed designing a working environment that is modern, friendly and encouraging at the same time. The project is an example of how Socially Responsible Design may be applied to the reality of a multinational Corporation.
