Furniture for Over-65s

DESCRIPTION

Conceptual work on furniture that improves the quality of life of older people. The project was implemented in cooperation of business and academia so that the students could know real-life problems that designers face in their work (real customer, real problem). The students’ task was to develop an idea of a piece of bathroom furniture for specific group of users (including senior people at the age of over 65). The project task required the students to collect input data (such as potential restrictions, materials to be used). Then the needs of the over-65s were identified (user movement pattern in a bathroom, where and how obstacles arise, which of them can be eliminated or reduced). Next, the students discussed the results of interviews with the users to choose the optimum concept. As a result of the project an initial design concept of a furniture piece was created so that it meets the needs of older users.

JUSTIFICATION

The project followed the Design Thinking methodology. The students were involved in the full path of the design process. This approach led to the optimised solution that was also accepted by a company as a possible new product. The design developed by the students entirely satisfied the needs of the target users.
