Designing a Workspace That Inspires

DESCRIPTION

This project aimed at designing a new headquarter of the company not only to refresh the image of the company but also to present the company as open, flexible and quickly reacting to a changing situation. It was very important to establish relations with employees so that the space they work would support creativity and be an inspiration. Over a five-year relationship of GS Shop and IDEO produced the desired image of the company. When it was time for GS Shop to build a new headquarters, they wanted these values and attitudes towards the customer to be embedded right into the structure of the new building. That is why the priority was given to the physical spaces where employees did their work. The new headquarter was designed to support collaboration and feeling of unity among the employees. It was decided to oppose to the traditional Korean business culture and to decentralize the boss – the desks were arranged so that anyone has a feeling of being equally important. The offices were equipped with a non-standard furniture such as a toothbrush storage or personal staff lockers.

JUSTIFICATION

This project is evaluated as successful as it showcases how the Design Thinking methodology helped create a communication pattern between GS Shop and their customers. It was a multichannel project that allowed also for a renewed image of the company and designing new organization of work in the newly-built facility. An important aspect thereof was to loosen the typical Korean model of work.
