Design and development to improve the quality of life. Innovative forms and functions of furniture pieces for over-65s.

DESCRIPTION

Design and development to improve the quality of life. Innovative forms and functions of furniture pieces for over-65s. It is the third project in the series of initiatives for older people. The project included creative work on utility products that will improve the quality of life at an older age. The project was implemented in cooperation of business and academia so that the students could know real-life problems that designers face in their work (real customer, real problem). The students’ task was to develop a furniture or a product for older people. The project task included collecting input data (such as potential restrictions, materials to be used). Then the needs of the older people were identified, including the patterns of how people use the products, where and how obstacles arise, which improvements and additional functionalities should be added to solve the problems. Next, the students discussed the results of interviews with the users to choose the optimum concept. As a result of the project an initial design concept of utility products was created so that it meets the needs of older users.

JUSTIFICATION

The students went through the full design process in pursuit of optimum solutions. A number of design concepts were created according to the needs of the target group. The solutions were accepted by the company and qualified for further development works. The project was implemented according to the Design Thinking methodology.
