A Digital Literacy App for Young Learners

DESCRIPTION

The project idea was to develop adaptive, game-based exercises for kids aged four to seven in Brazilian public schools. In order to help level the opportunities for children at this crucial stage of development, the Lemann Foundation, a nonprofit focused on broadening access to high-quality education, approached IDEO to design a digital literacy platform. Gatópolis was designed to help educators teach reading and writing to young pupils through typical trial-and-error exercises. Gatópolis is a digital game and a diagnostic tool that builds up kids’ reading proficiency through games and helps teacher solve problems in the learning process. IDEO worked closely with educators to develop a diagnostic algorithm that identifies patterns in the mistakes a child makes in a Gatópolis game. The app instantly measures every student’s level of proficiency, adapts games accordingly, and gives teachers suggestions for grouping students by level, as well as activities that are appropriate for each group. Gatópolis was funded by the Lemann Foundation and is distributed for free through Google Play, giving children benefits that will last a lifetime.

JUSTIFICATION

The project allowed designing and implementing Gatopolis, an innovative diagnostic tool in a form of a digital game for kids. Children at school age improve their literacy skills through play and fun. The implementation of this project allowed reducing the opportunity gap for kids attending Brazilian public schools.
