Design Thinking in designing Samsung products

DESCRIPTION

Samsung and IDEO have shared a history of collaboration since the early 1990s. Together, these two companies have worked on more than 50 projects, from a series of conceptual multimedia devices to industry-changing monitors, TVs, laptops, mobile phones and interfaces, and mobile platform strategies. The Samsung/IDEO partnership used the human-centered design approach. In 2000 Samsung designers, marketers, and strategists set up a studio in Palo Alto to learn from the IDEO’s socially responsible design approach. Together, the teams used design thinking to look at the entire business of electronic gadgets through a new lens. By putting users at the center of the process, and beginning to understand their needs and emerging behaviors, Samsung found it could not only satisfy existing customers, but also begin to anticipate market and society shifts. Samsung and IDEO created a design super-team that followed a journey from designing consumer electronics toward an even bigger market of back-end services and interactive and systems-based services. The partnership with IDEO has helped Samsung adopt new ways to integrate teams, a human-centered design approach and prototyping, and the methodologies to merge technology and design to create a leading-edge consumer solutions. Since 2000 Samsung has doubled its internal design teams. Examples of cooperation include award-winning 970P and 971P monitors, Samsung Memory advertisement campaign, a Syncmaster 400TFT display, and two entertainment system projects (Simplemedia and Totalmedia) that have not reached the production stage.

JUSTIFICATION

The project has changed the attitude of Samsung designers to the producer – customer relations by setting the priority to satisfying user needs. A new branch of Samsung business was created: delivering services based on new technologies. It is crucial that big companies offering electronic equipment used by millions of people worldwide know that they can achieve their goals by placing the user in the centre. It is a win-win situation for everyone.
